The Effect of Different Accent in Understanding Procedure Text in Listening Class
The study highlights the importance of listening skills in language learning, emphasizing that listening comprehension is a complex process that goes beyond vocabulary and sentence structure. It involves familiarity with accents, intonation, and speaking rates. Differences in accents can impact learners' understanding, especially in procedure texts that require step by step comprehension.
The research seeks to address three main questions:
- How do accent variations affect students' understanding of procedure texts in listening class?
- Are certain accents more challenging or easier to understand?H
- How do students perceive and rate the difficulty of understanding different accents?
This quantitative study involved pre- and post-tests with seven third-semester English Education students at IAIN Kediri. Students’ comprehension was tested through listening to procedure texts with British and American accents. Various question types (true-false and multiple-choice) evaluated comprehension, aiming to assess which accent facilitated better understanding.
