An Analysis of Students Difficulties in Listening Comprehension of Procedure Text

This study explores the challenges faced by third semester english Education students in comprehending procedural texts through audio recordings. Procedural texts, which provide step by step instructions, are crucial for both academic and everyday contexts. However, students often encounter difficulties due to factors such as rapid speech, unfamiliar accents, poor audio quality, limited vocabulary, and the absence of visual aids. These issues hinder their ability to follow instructions and grasp the intended meaning of the texts.

Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research involved seven students from IAIN Kediri. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and documentation to gain insights into students' listening comprehension difficulties. The findings reveal that the speed of delivery was the most common issue, especially when technical terms or unfamiliar vocabulary were involved. Additionally, unclear pronunciation and accents, particularly British accents, posed significant barriers to understanding. Poor audio quality and environmental distractions further compounded these challenges. Moreover, the lack of visual support limited students' ability to comprehend complex procedures.

To overcome these obstacles, students employed strategies like repeated listening, pausing, rewinding, and taking notes. These techniques helped them process the information in smaller, more manageable segments. While these strategies proved effective, students emphasized the need for visual aids to support their learning, particularly for complex instructions. The study underscores the importance of integrating multimodal approaches, such as combining audio and visual elements, into teaching methods. It also highlights the need for authentic and high quality audio materials to improve students' listening skills.
